blending with nature

Tyson Research Center as a component of Washington University’s International Center for Advanced Renewal Energy and Sustainability.

There are labs and a greenhouse on the top floor, connected to outdoor rest areas and experimentation areas and then expanding into the huge natural environment. On the lower level, the student facilities have public spaces that are linked to the existing Tyson Center. The main entrance is placed between the labs and the student facilities, providing a view of the dense woods.

The building locates on the steep slope area facing south for sunlight, and the roof functions recycling of rainwater and controls the sunlight and natural ventilation efficiently. The six shafts, as main beams, blend with the existing landscape and fade away in the background. The roof and walls integrate into one organism, dissolving their boundary.
